Wisdom Teeth Removal in Fort McMurray
When there is overcrowding in your teeth, sometimes it’s necessary to get your wisdom teeth removed.
In many people, overcrowding sets in during the late teens due to wisdom teeth growing in. Wisdom teeth, or third molars, are commonly extracted if they have decayed, cause pain, resulted in infection or cause your other teeth to move.

Not everyone gets wisdom teeth, and not everyone who gets wisdom teeth needs them removed. Your family dentist takes x-rays at your regular checkups to keep an eye on these extra molars. If it turns out you need wisdom teeth removal in Fort McMurray, you can rely on the Oral Surgeon at Timberlea Services Centre to complete the procedure efficiently to minimize your pain.
During Wisdom Teeth Removal
Some wisdom teeth need to be removed before they come in all the way while others can wait until after. This procedure can be done by your Oral Surgeon. In many cases, you will feel pain as the wisdom teeth grow in. This is a sure sign that you need wisdom tooth removal in Fort McMurray.
We will ensure that we provide you with the best type of sedation to fit your level of nervousness. If you require IV sedation or general anesthesia for this procedure, our Medical Anesthesiologist will administer your sedation, while our Oral Surgeon removes your wisdom teeth.
To remove the wisdom teeth, your Oral Surgeon will open up your gums over the tooth and take out any bone that may be covering the tooth. Then the tooth is removed. Sometimes your wisdom teeth need to be cut into smaller pieces to be removed more easily. If your teeth are already in your mouth and are not impacted, these steps aren’t always necessary.
After Wisdom Teeth Removal
After your wisdom teeth are removed, your stitches will dissolve over time. Recovery after your wisdom teeth removal will normally take a few days and varies person to person. Pain and swelling may occur in your gums, and bleeding may not stop for about 24 hours. To mitigate these and other problems, we recommend:
- Taking painkillers as prescribed by your dentist
- Putting gauze over the area, biting it periodically and changing it when soaked with blood
- Not lying flat as this may prolong bleeding and prop your head on pillows
- Using an ice pack on the outside of your check to reduce swelling
- Avoiding physical activity after surgery because it can increase bleeding
- Eating soft foods like pudding
- Not using a straw for several days as it can cause a blood clot
- After the first day, rinse your mouth with warm salt water to reduce swelling
- Not smoking for at least 24 hours after surgery
- Avoiding touching the area with your tongue or fingers
- Brushing your teeth and tongue very carefully
