What is a Dental Implant?
Dental implants are metal posts that are surgically positioned in the jawbone beneath your gum and are then used as support on which to mount replacement teeth. The metal posts provide stable support for artificial teeth because they fuse to the jawbone. Any artificial teeth attached to the implant will not slip or shift in your mouth, making eating and speaking easier than traditional dentures do. There are two types of dental implants:
This type of implant is surgically implanted into the jawbone. They are typically shaped like small screws or cylinders. After the surrounding gum tissue has healed, a second procedure is needed to connect a post to the original implant. Finally, an artificial tooth is attached to the post.
These implants are placed under the gum, but instead of being implanted into the jawbone, the metal frames are placed on or above it. As the gums begin to heal, the frame becomes fixed to the jawbone. This type of implant is commonly used in patients who have a shallow jawbone.
Benefits of Dental Implants
Though there are other options for replacing missing teeth, dental implants provide the most stable and permanent option. A bridge, when cared for properly, can last up to ten years, but will still require replacement later. Dental implants are a more lasting solution that, with the proper care, can last a lifetime. Unlike bridges, implants also do not require the preparation or grinding of neighbouring teeth, keeping your entire mouth in better condition.
Compared to dentures, dental implants provide a much more stable option. You will not have to worry about what foods you eat or the slipping and clicking of your dentures while you speak. Nor will you need all the added cleaning products and care that dentures require. Dental implants can be cared for just like regular teeth, with normal brushing, flossing and dental checkups.
